What players say

At the table

Players who have run Cairn describe a very light, fast game where the fiction decides most things and combat is deadly. Tables that like it tend to enjoy the swingy, grounded tone. Tables that want more mechanics or a bigger power curve find it thin.

Is Cairn the right system for the game I want to run?

The few people who say they ran Cairn are positive. They like its light rules, fiction-first rulings, and leveling through in-world gains, and one has run it for a group in several genres. The thread is mostly advice to a prospective GM, and much of it is about other games (Forbidden Lands, Shadowdark, Basic Roleplaying, OpenQuest), which I ignored. 4 firsthand · 67 comments

Cairn vs Dragonbane vs Shadowdark - best for a long-running campaign?

The thread is mostly about Dragonbane and Shadowdark. The few people who have run Cairn like it as a flexible, rules-light system, and they say its campaign tools are thin, especially the dungeon and faction generation tables. 3 firsthand · 120 comments

Help me choose a system (between Dragonbane, Shadowdark, ICRPG, Cairn and Vagabond)

The thread is mostly about Dragonbane and Shadowdark, with only a few firsthand Cairn reports. Those players found it the simplest and fastest of the shortlist, with deadly combat and progression that comes from in-world gains rather than levels. One GM said they had to hack in Into the Odd-style level-ups to get the growth they wanted over a campaign. 3 firsthand · 76 comments

Tried running a Cairn game for the first time, it's a TPK, lol

Firsthand Cairn reports describe deadly, swingy play that ends in memorable failures. The OP's first game was a TPK on the Caverns of Hidrida one-shot, and the table found it hilarious and a great first impression. The only real friction was ambiguous hydra rules (head regrowth, a blast attack that doesn't weaken as heads fall), which the module's author is now revising. 3 firsthand · 16 comments

TTRPG rules system somewhere between D&D and Cairn?

The thread is mostly about alternatives to Cairn, and the only firsthand play report is the original poster's. They played Cairn a few times and liked how light it is and that it has no leveling, but they found it a little too light. 1 firsthand · 36 comments

Cairn but D6?

The only firsthand Cairn report is the original poster's. They run it at an open West Marches-style table, love its philosophy, and have one problem: newcomers get confused about which die to roll. The rest of the thread is advice and recommendations for d6 systems and hacks, which don't count. 1 firsthand · 29 comments
