What players say

At the table

Cypher System is a low-prep game where players roll everything and the GM sets a single level number for NPCs, doors and obstacles. Tables are split. Many find it fast and flexible, while a vocal minority dropped it after a campaign or two. A lot of the positive reports come from one-shots and convention games.

Thoughts on Cypher System?

Most people who ran Cypher System, including Numenera and other Cypher-based settings, found it easy to GM and fun, especially for improv-heavy, genre-mashup, or superhero games. A vocal minority found cyphers immersion-breaking, the pools and edge/effort confusing, or character builds punishing, and a few said other games do the same job better. 21 firsthand · 86 comments

Cypher System Thoughts?

Most people who ran or played Cypher System report fast, low-prep games where the GM never rolls and the system stays out of the way. A vocal minority tried it and dropped it because of pick-from-list character building, pool-spending caution, and a feeling that it wasn't better than 5e. Several comments are really about Numenera, and I left those out. 13 firsthand · 90 comments

What’s wrong with the cypher system?

People who ran or played Cypher System (Numenera, The Strange, Cypher Supers) describe an easy-to-GM game with a great setting, where the repetitive core roll and static character options wear thin after a while. Reception is split: some tables love it, while others found it dull and said new players struggled to grasp it. 13 firsthand · 145 comments

Help me find an alternative to Cypher System

Firsthand reports on Cypher System are split. GMs who lean into its challenge-level improvisation say prep is minimal and fast, but the OP and another GM found setting prep heavy and the system a poor fit for their groups, and one commenter says players who haven't GMed it tend not to enjoy it. Most of the thread is recommendations for alternatives such as Cortex Prime, Savage Worlds, Year Zero, 2d20, Dragonbane and Genesys, and those are ignored here. 5 firsthand · 24 comments

Monte Cook just launched a new Cypher System crowdfunding campaign

The few people who ran or played Cypher System enjoy the foci, GM intrusions and cyphers, and say they make for varied, fun one-shots, including superhero games. Their main complaints are damage coming out of the same pools players spend to improve rolls, and a confusing difficulty system. The thread is mostly hype and discussion of the new crowdfunding campaign, and several of the stronger complaints come from Numenera play, which I excluded. 5 firsthand · 65 comments
